SEE FLAMINGOS IN WALVIS BAY, NAMIBIA: BIRD SANCTUARY PARK
Bird Sanctuary is located on the C14 road as you are coming from Walvis Bay or Swakopmund; you can see pink flamingos and other birds from the road. The sanctuary is man-made; water pools were created for the birds to play in and drink the readily available water. The Sanctuary is located in the edges of Namib Desert, near Dune 7.
People can park their cars and take a small nature walk watching the birds. The Bird Sanctuary, together with the lagoon and salt pans form the Walvis Bay Wetlands. There are so many different species of birds here that migrate thousands of miles to pass through Walvis Bay—birds like Flamingos, Ruddy Turnstones, Little Stints, Curlew Sandpipers, Pelicans, and more. If you walk along the lagoon, you will have spectacular views of colorful birds.
There are many tours/excursions to the Bird Sanctuary that are educational, perfect for bird-watching fanatics. Morning visits are better as the sun is not too much and birds are congregating. You can also rent a car and drive there yourself. But, for visitors who are on a short visit, like a cruise ship stopping here for a day, it is best to book an excursion. For lunch, usually, they have Oysters and other kinds of seafood dishes.
