DUNE 7 IN NAMIB DESERT, WALVIS BAY, NAMIBIA
Namibia is known for the Namib Desert and dunes that cover some parts of the country. For people visiting Walvis Bay or Swakopmund, Dune 7 is one of the best attractions and is the tallest dune in this area. It is a must-see—especially for those not able to drive a long distance to see the Big Daddy Dune or other well-known dunes at Sossusvlei.
Located in Walvis Bay, just a short drive from the shoreline, you take the C14 road passing the Bird Sanctuary, then turning left into D1984. Dune 7 can be seen from the main road, as soon as you turn the corner. The whole way from Walvis Bay is scenic and spectacular, from dramatic flamingo scenes at the Bird Sanctuary to the stunning views of the desert. People who have visited Cape Town or Johannesburg, South Africa, can easily get to Walvis Bay by air.
The dunes in Walvis Bay overlook the Atlantic Ocean, and they are part of the Namib Desert. You have to climb to the top of the dune for the best views—whether by foot or quad bikes. It takes a few minutes to climb to the top of Dune 7, but if your legs usually give up on you, you may struggle a little and need more time to climb the dune. Bring a bottle of water.
For activities around this part of the Namib Desert, there is Dune 7 Adventures, which provides Quad Bikes tours, sandboarding, and nature drives.
It’s best to visit Dune 7 early in the morning before the sun gets too hot. Also, this is a popular attraction in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. It is best to go early before tour buses start to arrive.
