TRANSPORTATION IN VICTORIA FALLS ZIMBABWE: AIRPORT TRANSFERS & GETTING AROUND
AIRPORT TRANSFERS FROM VICTORIA FALLS AIRPORT (VFA)
Shuttles
At Victoria Falls International Airport (code VFA), the most common mode of transportation is a shuttle. You need to book for the shuttle transfer in advance, this can be easily done online. There are no shuttles parked outside the airport if no bookings have been made. We made a mistake of not booking for a shuttle in advance—we had to wait for about an hour before a shuttle came for us.
Car Rental
Most people that visit Victoria Falls Town do not hire cars because the places where attractions are located are within a walking distance or can be easily accessed by guided tours, that provide transportation to those locations from most hotels.
Taxis
Taxis are available at the airport but you will pay more than you would for a shuttle.
GETTING AROUND VICTORIA FALLS TOWN AND NATIONAL PARK (FALLS)
WALKING
Victoria Falls Town is quite small and most attractions, shops, restaurants, and other places of interest, are located close to hotels. Tourists usually opt to walk everywhere, including to see the famous Victoria Falls located in Victoria Falls National Park. The entrance to the National Park is located right next to the border, between Zimbabwe and Zambia, where Zimbabwe immigration offices are located—you can walk right through the immigration offices, have your passport stamped, and visit Victoria Falls on the Zambia side as well.
It is advisable not to walk alone when it is dark to avoid being exposed to theft and wild animals that sometimes roam freely around Victoria Falls. Locals are used to walking around at night but tourists are advised to be cautious.
FREE SHUTTLES
Most hotels provide free shuttle services to Victoria Falls National Park and other places of interest. Ask your hotel concierge for departing times.
TAXIS
If your hotel does not provide free shuttle services or you are not willing to wait, you can ask the hotel receptionist to call a taxi for you. Prices are very reasonable and the services are very efficient.
COMBIS/MINIBUSES
The locals use combis/mini buses as their preferred mode of transportation because it is cheap. You might have to wait for a while for the minibus to get full, however, if you are willing to pay the driver a bit more, they can take you to your destination as a private passenger and charge you a taxi fee.
GETTING TO LIVINGSTONE ZAMBIA FROM VICTORIA FALLS ZIMBABWE
When going to Livingstone, Zambia, after crossing the Zambia border, I proceeded to a spot where a few taxis parked. The owner of Trust Taxis took me to Livingstone from the border. His prices were reasonable and he was very patient with me—I had to make a stop at a few cashpoints/ATM’s looking to withdraw some Zambian Kwacha notes. I hired him for the day as he knew interesting places in Livingstone Town and a nearby village for a cultural tour. His mobile numbers are: +260 978 897 120 and +260 969 997 120.
BICYCLES
Some people opt to hire bicycles to get around Victoria Falls. For those looking to visit Victoria Falls National Park to see the falls, hiring a bicycle might work out to be more expensive and cumbersome than taking a taxi—the whole time the bicycle is not in use when you are exploring Falls, you are paying for it.
WATER & AIR TOURS
If you are interested in seeing Victoria Falls and the National Park, including the mighty Zambezi River from the air or water, there are a few good guided tours that provide good services. Shearwater Cruises provide a sunset cruise tour on Zambezi River, drinks and snacks are provided—but the best part of the tour is seeing hippos and elephants play while the sun sets in the background. We went on this guided tour and enjoyed every minute of it.
Shearwater also provides a Helicopter Tour over Victoria Falls, Zambezi River, and the famous Batoka Gorge.
