How to View JET D’EAU from All Angles of Geneva


Jet d’Eau is a water fountain in Geneva, Switzerland that is 140m in its height. Amazingly, the water pushed out into the air at a time is 7 tonnes at 200km/hr; 500 liters of water is pumped per second.

The fountain is positioned in Lake Geneva, which is one of the largest lakes in Western Europe. It was initially installed as a safety valve for a hydraulic plant in the 19th century but over the years it quickly served as Genève’s top tourist attraction and landmark.

Meaning & Pronunciation: Jet d’Eau is a French word which in English means ‘Water Jet’ or ‘fountain’.  It is pronounced as [ʒɛ do].

Jet d’Eau can be best viewed from the following places.

1| Prom. Du Lac

You can view Jet d’Eau from the area between Jardin Anglais and Geneve-Eaux-Vives CGN will give you dramatic views of the fountain. But you will get the best view from Jetee des Eaux-Vives which is the closest place to the fountain.

2| Quai Wilson Road

3| Bains des Paquis

4) Pont du Mont-Blanc

Jet d’Eau at Night

When the weather is warm, Jet d’Eau is lit until 11 o’clock at night. The fountain is illuminated by bright colors such as pink two or three times a year to acknowledge humanitarian efforts. These colors are more visible and come out stunningly at night than during daytime.

How to Get Here

You will find buses from the main train and bus station ‘Gare de Cornavin’.  The distance from the station to Jet d’Eau is 1.8 km. For example, you can take bus number 9 which goes towards ‘Chêne-Bourg, Petit-Bel-Air’. Get off at ‘Genève, Pierre-Fatio (Rive)’ and walk to Jet d’Eau which is 700 meters away; it will take you about 8 minutes. You can also get bus 25. The whole journey will take about 15 minutes.

Walking from ‘Gare de Cornavin’ station to the fountain will take about 22 minutes. If you are driving or take a taxi it will take you about 6 minutes to get to the water fountain.

Schedule & Opening hours

In summer the water jet starts pumping water at 9 am until sunset. It illuminates at night until 11 pm. In winter (November to March) the opening hours are 10 am to 4 pm. The fountain will close when it’s being maintained, when there are strong winds, or when the temperature falls below 2°C.
