Memphis, Tennessee, is a city renowned for its rich musical heritage and southern food. Elvis Presley lived in Memphis and gifted the city with soulful rhythms of the blues. Unfortunately, it is also the place where the civil rights movement leader, Dr Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed while visiting the city. Below are different Memphis’ Activities that both adults and kids can explore and enjoy. We took a road trip from Oklahoma to Memphis, via Arkansas.

1| Graceland

The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, made Graceland his home. This mansion is situated on a 13.8-acre estate, and was Elvis’s home for more than 20 years. It remains one of the most visited private homes in America. Visitors to Graceland have the opportunity to step into the life of Elvis. You can explore the interiors of the mansion, including the famed Jungle Room and Trophy Building. This is where numerous awards and accolades are showcased. Next to the Graceland mansion, the Presley’s family built The Guest House at Graceland where visitors can stay while visiting Memphis. The hotel’s theme is ‘all things Elvis Presley’. There is live music, a free night snack that was Elvis’s favorite—peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and a theater where Elvis’s movies are shown.

Graceland offers a wealth of exhibits and attractions, allowing visitors to delve deeper into Elvis’s life and career. The Elvis Presley Car Museum, features his impressive collection of automobiles. Also, there are exhibits highlighting his impact on music and popular culture. Graceland is surely one of Memphis’ activities that are memorable. Additionally, guests can stroll through the Meditation Garden, where Elvis and members of his family are laid to rest.

2| National Civil Rights Museum

The National Civil Rights Museum, located at the former Lorraine Motel, offers a poignant exploration of the American civil rights movement. This is where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was tragically assassinated in 1968, when he visited Memphis. The museum traces the history of the struggle for civil rights from the days of slavery to the present day.

Photo: This is the actual hotel room Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stayed in. The room remains the way it was left after Dr. King died on April 4th, 1968.

There are interactive exhibits, multimedia presentations, and powerful artifacts.  Visitors gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by African Americans in their quest for equality and justice. Exhibits include the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the March on Washington, and the replica of the Greensboro lunch, where the sit-in movement began. Through educational programs, community outreach initiatives, and special events, the museum fosters a greater awareness of issues related to race, equality, and human rights.

3| Beale Street

Beale Street is the heart of rhythmic beats of blues, jazz, and rock ‘n’ roll, earning its reputation as the “Home of the Blues.” It has served as the epicenter of Memphis’ music scene since the late 19th century. The street attracts musicians and revelers from around the world into its bars, clubs, and live music venues. Beale Street also has a diverse array of dining and entertainment options—it is a must go to street when you visit Memphis.

4| Sun Studio

Sun Studio was founded by legendary producer Sam Phillips in 1950. This recording studio played a pivotal role in launching the careers of iconic artists such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Today, visitors to Sun Studio get guided tours led by passionate storytellers. Elvis recorded his groundbreaking hits here–visitors can see the original recording equipment. Sun Studio also hosts live music events, recording sessions, and special performances. 

5| Memphis Zoo

The Memphis Zoo is home to a diverse array of animals from around the globe, making it a beloved destination for families and animal enthusiasts alike. There are about 3,500 animals from more than 500 species–such as lions, elephants, hippos, bears, and giraffes.  

The Memphis Zoo also offers a range of educational programs, interactive experiences, and family-friendly attractions. From daily animal encounters and keeper chats to seasonal events and wildlife conservation initiatives. Children can also feed a giraffe and ride the zoo’s iconic carousel.

1| Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken: The crispy, juicy fried spicy chicken has made Gus’s a Memphis institution. Be prepared for a wait, but the delicious food is well worth it.

2| The Arcade Restaurant: The oldest cafe in Memphis, serving classic diner fare since 1919. Enjoy American breakfast, and try their famous sweet potato pancakes.

3| Rendezvous BBQ: Known for their Memphis-style BBQ ribs. Located in downtown Memphis, in a historic alley.

4| Central BBQ: Has a variety of BBQ dishes, including ribs, brisket, and smoked sausage. Their signature BBQ nachos are a local favorite.

1| Beale Street Market: You will find eclectic shops and boutiques. You can also get unique souvenirs and gifts. They also have locally-made crafts, artwork, and apparel reflecting the spirit of Memphis.

2| Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid: A massive retail and entertainment complex housed within a transformed sports arena. Here you can shop for outdoor gear, apparel, and equipment. They also have attractions like an indoor swamp, aquarium, and observation deck.

3| South Main Arts District: Located in the historic South Main Arts District. Its known for its galleries, shops, and restaurants. You will find local art, handmade jewelry, vintage clothing, and antiques.

WHAT TO DO WITH KIDS IN MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE

1| Memphis Children’s Museum: There are hands-on exhibits, interactive play areas, and educational activities for children of all ages. This is one of Memphis’ activities that parents love taking their children to.

2| Shelby Farms Park: Visitors can enjoy hiking and biking trails, playgrounds, paddle boating, and a treetop adventure course. This urban park is one of the biggest in the United States.

3| Memphis Botanic Garden: Visitors can explore themed gardens, interactive exhibits, and family-friendly events. 

4| Pink Palace Museum: Kids are immersed in history and science at the Pink Palace Museum. They can explore exhibits on dinosaurs, ancient civilizations, and the history of Memphis. This included the replica of a Piggly Wiggly store.

5| Mud Island River Park: Kids will enjoy a riverwalk, pedal boats, and a water play area. They will also learn about the Mississippi River through interactive exhibits and displays.
