Mexico City is the capital city of Mexico and most populous city in North America, with almost 9 million people living in the city. Tourists flock to Mexico City to experience its over 160 museums, various concerts and music venues, unique local cuisine and immerse in the rich Mexican culture. The Mexican Peso is the currency of Mexico and the predominant language of Mexico City is Spanish.

March to June are the warm months, with an average daily high of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. In the cool season, which lasts from November to February, the average daily high is below 72 degrees Fahrenheit. From June to September it is the wet season, daily chances of precipitation is around 60 – 70%.

An avowed cultural center, Palacio de Bellas Artes proves to be an important and symbolic hub in Mexico City that educates on the traditions and culture of Mexico. Open from 10 am to 5 pm every day, except Mondays, the center has embraced many different musical events illustrated by dance and opera. HOUSE OF TILES (LA CASA DE LOS AZULEJO)

Depicting the culture of color and unique architecture, this palace constructed in the 1700s is literally molded with blue and white tiles plastered on the outside walls. The name ‘La Casa de Los Azulejo’ translates to ‘House of Tiles’ in English. The house is open 7 am – 1 am every day.

MEXICO CITY METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL

Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral is the oldest (and largest) cathedral in Latin America. Holding many altars, chapels, organs, choirs, and crypts within it, the cathedral prevails as one of the most visited sites in the whole of Mexico. It was restored in the 1900s and still stands as a prominent religious symbol of the city.

This large main square in Mexico City has been around since the Aztec times and located right opposite Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral. Currently, it harbors cultural celebrations such as art shows and musical performances.

SOUMAYA MUSEUM

The Soumaya Museum is open from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm except on Tuesdays. The museum was founded in 1994 and houses over 44,000 pieces of art, an entire day of art watching might suit art enthusiasts.

CASTILLO DE CHAPULTEPEC

The Chapultepec Castle is a former imperial residence that currently serves as a national museum of history. Doors are open 9 am – 5 pm, except on Mondays when it is closed. The hill where it resides on used to be a sacred land of the Aztecs. History and traditions are prominent in the castle, waiting to be seen.

Franz Mayer Museum is closed on Mondays, open 10 am to 5 am on Tuesdays, and open 10 am – 7 am every other day of the week. This museum houses Latin America’s largest display of decorative arts. It displays textiles, silver pieces, furniture, and many other types of art.

Museo del Ejercito which translates to Museum of the Army and Air Force sits right in the center of Mexico City. The museum was opened in 2010 to celebrate the independence of Mexico. It is open to the public from 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesdays to Sundays. The museum is closed on Mondays.

This pyramid was constructed by the Aztecs hundreds of years ago. It is open for viewing every day from 9 am to 5 pm except for Mondays. The pyramid has been standing since the 1300’s.

The Museo Frida Kahlo is basically a large house serving as a museum dedicated to the work of artist Frida Kahlo. Doors are open from 11 am to 5:30 pm on Wednesdays, closed on Mondays, and open from 10 am to 5:30 pm every other day of the week.

MERCADO ROMA

This is a marketplace in Mexico City open 9 am – 1 pm, Thursday through Saturday. While from Sunday to Wednesday, the market is open 9 am – 8 pm. It has a park, markets, flea markets, food stores, and many restaurants.

LA LAGUNILLA MARKET

The public market is about 10 blocks north of Mexico City’s main plaza. It has clothing stores, flea markets, antique stores, soap shops, shoe stores, and a wide variety of restaurants. Opening hours are 10 am to 6:30 pm every day.

ANTARA POLANCO

An upscale shopping mall for fashion located in Mexico City, this location is open from 11 am to 11 pm. This three-story mall has beautiful decor and is perfect for finding quality clothing and food.

REFORMA 222

This complex is open from 6 am to 12 am. Here you can find shops, restaurants, and many other services including a theater. The architecture of the center is often praised as well.

PERISUR

Perisur mall, in southern Mexico City, is open from 11 am to 9 pm. It is very connected to the public transportation of the city, so reaching the mall is not a problem. Here you can find many shops, galleries, and various locations of interest.

LA GRUTA RESTAURANT: This restaurant is open from 11 am to 7 pm every day. It serves a variety of Mexican dishes including lamb, chicken, and beef. You can also enjoy various alcoholic drinks at the premises.

PAJOL: This restaurant is open 1:30 pm – 10:45 pm every day except when it is closed on Sundays. It has excellent food, friendly service, and a cozy atmosphere. Pajol was labeled by Wall Street Journal as the best restaurant in Mexico City.

SAN ANGEL INN: This restaurant has live music, top of the notch service, excellent Mexican food, and valet parking. The location is open 7 am – 1 am on weekdays, 8 am – 1 am on Saturdays, and 8 am -10 pm on Sundays.

EL HUARACHE DE JAMAICA: This restaurant was founded by the cook who founded Huarache food. Now the restaurant is run by her great-grandson.

EL TIZONSITO: This famous restaurant in Mexico City is known for its tasty Taco Al Pastor.

LOCAL FOOD TO TRY

Barbacoa: Roasted meat, for hours, in an underground pit. It is Mexican barbeque. Barbacoa is served with tortillas, lime, onion, and salsa.

Pescado a la Talla: This traditional Mexican food is a whole fish that has been grilled and slathered in mayo and served in corn tortillas.

Huarache: A tortilla with meat and bean made into a paste.

Taco Al Pastor: Pork, onions, pineapples, and tortilla

Chicharrones Prensados: pressed fat from the skin of a pig

Frutas en Tacha: This Mexican street food contains various fruits preserved in piloncillo syrup, a dark cane sugar.

Tlacoyos: These oval shaped Masa cakes are stuffed with cheese, beans, and squash.

 

Transportation in Mexico City

Airport: Mexico City’s international airport is called Mexico City International Airport, or officially known as Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juarez. It is Mexico’s busiest airport, but the best way to enter Mexico from another country.

Buses: ETN Turistar will go to all major cities along the Pacific coast, including Mexico City. Grupo ADO connects Mexico City to many other small and large cities across Mexico. Grupo Estrella Blanca connects with Mexico City and travels across the north, central, and western parts of Mexico.
