San Agustin Church—declared a world heritage site in 1993 by UNESCO—is made of stones and is the oldest of its kind in the whole country of the Philippines. The construction started in 1587 and was completed in 1607. The church has survived earthquakes, wars, invasions, and other natural disasters, just like Binondo Church in Manila downtown.
It is said that the founder of the city of Manila was buried on the grounds of San Agustin Church.
The beauty of the inside of San Agustin Church is undeniable. The red carpets, the grand colorful altar, the black gates near the altar, and contouring of the walls—all these create beautiful scenery. San Agustin Church in Manila was inspired by churches built in Mexico by the Augustinians.
The monastery was turned into a museum after World War Two. At the museum, you will find religious artworks, old artifacts, and other items that date back in time. When you climb the stairs, you will find the old library and other rooms, including access to the choir loft.
Outside the church in the streets, there are horse carriages that carry tourists around the Intramuros area for a fee. Actually, there are so many tours going around the Intramuros area—horse tours, walking tours, and etcetera.
