THE SPANISH STEPS & PIAZZA DI SPAGNA, ROME
The Spanish steps rise up from Piazza di Spagna in Rome, Italy; people have been sitting here since the 1800’s chatting, listening to street music and eating food. The Piazza di Spagna was named after the Spanish embassy but the steps themselves carry a legacy from the French. At the foot of the steps, you will find the Barcaccia (the sinking boat fountain) which is believed to have been created by Pietro Bernini, father of the famous Gian Lorenzo.
Within the area you will find many boutiques and designer shops; It seems to be a very busy shopping area with high-end brands such as channel, as well as affordable shops such as H&M and Zara. As you go down the steps you will see a beautiful view of that part of Rome. At the very top of the steps, you will find a handful of vendors selling varied items; one vendor that captured my attention was an artist who painted the faces of people. I am not sure how much he was charging but he was doing a brilliant job.
