Ciutadella Park in Barcelona
Ciutadella Park is a very beautiful park in Barcelona officially called Parc de la Ciutadella. You will find beautiful attractions in the park such as Cascada Monumental and its waterfall. On the other side of the park, you will find Barcelona Zoo. Entrance to the park and waterfall area is free but you pay to visit the zoo.
Lake & Waterfall at Ciutadella Park
Inside Ciutadella Park, you will come across a lake and a beautiful waterfall with a statue of Venus. The waterfall area is called Cascada Monumental. It is said Antoni Gaudi worked on some features on the waterfall, for example, the rocks and the iron poles.
You cannot miss it; almost everyone who goes to the park will be heading towards this waterfall. The combination of colors of the sky, water, vegetation and architecture makes the place radiate with splendor. It is a must see of the park; your eyes will surely be graced with pleasure.
Josep Fontseré was the architect who designed Ciutadella Park and its beautiful fountain. At the top of the monument, you will get a lovely view of Ciutadella Park and the lake. The horses at the top of the fountain look very nice in pictures.
Plaça de Joan Fiveller
Adjacent to Ciutadella Park you will find a square called Plaça de Joan Fiveller. In the pond, there is the ‘Woman in Despair’ sculpture. The sculptor, Joseph Llimona created a woman looking so sad and in despair, covered by a mane of hair. At the square, you will also find Catalunya de Parliament. The Catalan Parliament is in a building built as a military arsenal.
Barcelona Zoo
Barcelona Zoo spreads over 14 hectares of land in Ciutadella Park. Founded in 1892 it has over 7,000 animals and is perfect for a family visit. Barcelona Zoo is known for its dolphin shows and pony rides. You might want to start your day seeing attractions at Ciutadella Park such as the waterfall, Woman in Despair and the lake; finish your day at the zoo.
The Lady with the Umbrella
There is a lady carrying an umbrella in Ciutadella Park, it is a symbol of the park and Barcelona Zoo. It is said she symbolizes the most beautiful lady of the old Barcelona. The sculpture was created by Roig Soler for an 1888 exhibition held in Ciutadella Park.
Must See Attraction Nearby: Arc de Triomf
Arco de Triunfo de Barcelona is the look-alike of the Arch of Triumph in Paris. If you exit Ciutadella Park from the side where the waterfall (Cascada Monumental) is, you will see a long boulevard with tall street lights and a big brownish structure at the end. If you want to start from the arch, the nearest metro station is ‘Arc de Triomf’ on the red line (L1).

Mamut
Near the waterfall and the lake, you will find a giant elephant-like sculpture that will make you smile. If you want to know about these extinct mammals, there is a Mammoth Museum outside the park in Montcada Street showcasing Ice Age remains. The museum is a street away from Museu Picasso and the nearest Metro station is Jaume I.

Getting There
Please note that when using public transportation, it is easier to get off at the stop outside the zoo (‘Parc de la Ciutadella-Zoo’) and walk back along the park’s wall to find the entrance. For more information on Ciutadella Park, click here.
